Technique
This highly technical, movement-based class investigates the line of human movement and how it can affect the broader strokes of our dancing. Through the expansive use of the back and limbs, Varone's style will be explored through an emphasis on breath, strength, dynamic lyricism and musicality. Technique classes will be taught on a rotating basis by company members, ensuring a rich overview of styles and perspectives for each student.
Bodywork Option 1: Yoga with Netta Yerushalmy
This class will be informed primarily by the Iyengar yoga method and will include Vinyasa (flow) elements as well. With a focus on precise alignment and pointed concentration, we will practice a variety of challenging postures, including inversions, that strengthen and open up the body as well as the mind and nervous system. No prior knowledge required. Please bring a yoga mat and presence of mind.
Bodywork Option 2: Pilates with Erin Owen
This class is designed to help condition the body for dance, while providing knowledge that can be implemented in future self-care and injury prevention. For the most part, exercises will be based on traditional Pilates mat choreography, though emphasis will be placed on contemporary understanding of functional anatomy. We may also take time to explore specific issues as needed in order to promote healthy joint mechanics.
No previous Pilates experience is necessary since we'll begin towards the basic/intermediate end of the spectrum, and build from there. Please bring a mat and a towel, or two towels if you don't have a mat.
Repertory
This class will explore excerpts from a variety of pieces, offering the student an overview of Varone's work. Through this investigation the class will experience the wide range of movement dynamics, emotional nuance and spatial architecture inherent in Varone's choreography.
Creative Investigation with Doug Varone
The creation of new material will be the emphasis of this class. Phrase work, creative devices and performance skills will be explored throughout the week in a variety of ways that will expand the scope and potential of your dancing and artistry.
